Friday Night Extra 6.2.15 with guests Neil Taggart and Leigh Johnson from Ingatestone C. of E. Junior School.

Tonight we welcomed to the studio Head Teacher Neil Taggart and Mathematics Teacher Leigh Johnson from Ingatestone and Fryerning Church of England Junior School. They had both visited Shanghai in October. This is because the school is involved with a project learning about Mathematics teaching in China and seeing if ideas can be applied in the U.K. They spoke about their impressions of Shanghai, a city that many of us will have seen as a setting for the James Bond film Skyfall. The school that they visited had an expectation that every child could achieve highly in Mathematics learning. Lessons would involve constant questioning. Children would continue their learning at home where often parents and grandparents would be involved as they might be using the same textbooks that they had at school. Leigh was asked to demonstrate how she taught Maths and over seventy teachers were invited to watch and were impressed with the sense of enjoyment demonstrated by the pupils. The children regularly undertook exercises for their eyes. In Ingatestone, the school has introduced regular ten minute fast paced Mathematics lessons. A group of Chinese teachers will be visiting soon to continue the development of the project. It is hoped to continue to develop the links and to involve parents.

In the second hour we looked at a number of unusual news stories. There was sixties and seventies shock rocker Alice Cooper teaching Bible studies in his home town in Phoenix, Arizona, where he has built a Christian Centre for local young people. The University of Essex has introduced a ‘Nap nook’ where students can book a forty minute sleep slot. This led to listeners discussing whether they wrote their essays late at night when they were at University. Chris wrote that she always did her best essays after midnight. In Romania there is a church in the Fagaras mountains made entirely out of frozen blocks of snow. Back in China, Alibaba, their largest on-line retailer, is experimenting with using drones for deliveries in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.
