Friday Night Extra 30.1.15 with guest Ven. Mina Smallman, Archdeacon of Southend.

On a snowy day in Brentwood, it was good to welcome Archdeacon Mina as a guest to the studio. She brought her natural warmth which was much appreciated by listeners who got in touch during the interview and afterwards. Mina talked about her Christian experience as a child, living very close to a church. This meant she used to take herself to services. As a young mother the demands of her local Vicar in relation to the baptism of her child had been very off-putting. However a new Vicar changed the atmosphere at the church and Mina felt welcomed. Despite really enjoying her teaching career, whilst she was watching a female curate lead a service, she felt a voice tell her that one day she would be doing something like that. She did not know what this meant. Though not feeling prepared, she passed a selection conference and began training for the ministry. Throughout her ministry she has felt prompted. This was highlighted by the feeling she had to apply for the post of Archdeacon of Southend even though she felt inexperienced. She sees her role as being pastor to the pastors. She also spoke with passion about the fact that we live in a world that is too busy and that clergy need to model different values. It was interesting that almost everyone who contacted the show was working, despite it being Friday evening.

Tonight’s playlist.
