Stars at Whilton Mill – penultimate round

Phoenix FM-sponsored racing driver Lochlan Bearman went into the penultimate round of the Stars At Whilton Mill Kart Championship leading the Championship.

With a full grid of 34 drivers and with a number of the Super 1 Series (the UK’s Premier national Championship) drivers it was going to be a real challenge. Lochlan was also on a new kart which he had not used before.

In Heat 1 he started on Pole and led for 4 laps before being passed. He dropped to 3rd but regained 2nd from laps 7 to 10 then in the last corner the 3rd placed man made a lunge that took them both wide allowing the 4th place man into 2nd and Lochlan finished 4th.

Heat 2 he started from 27th on the grid and made a great start and was 15th by the completion of lap 2. He then made steady progress to get up to 9th before being caught in a 3 way battle eventually crossing the line in 10th spot.

His 3rd heat gave him a mid-grid start of 13th. Having learned more about the new chassis and making changes in each heat he was perfecting the set-up of the kart. At the end of lap 1 he was 9th, he picked off kart after kart and when they started lap 8 he was up to 4th. Using his smooth driving style he caught the leaders by lap 10 and managed to take 3rd on the final lap crossing the line on the bumper of the 2nd placed man.

The combined heat results were good enough to put him on pole for the final. Surrounded by the Super 1 drivers who are not in this championship and who drive with a win or nothing attitude, Lochlan had to be careful not to become a casualty. Unfortunately on Lap 2 he was hit in the side as they entered the ‘Boot’ and this dropped him down to 7th place, he regained 6th and stayed there until lap 7, on lap 8 he pulled of a brave move going inside on the flat out 1st corner, and made another place by slipstreaming up the long run into Christmas Corner. Now in 4th place behind the Super 1 drivers his team gave him the signal to stay where he was to protect his position from Championship rival Kieran Wragg who was 6 lengths behind. All looked good with 2 corners to go when the Super 1 drivers made contact with each other. Lochlan was forced to brake and go around the incident whilst Wragg with more time to deal with the incident slipped through to finish 2nd with Lochlan 4th.

After the race, Lochlan said, “It was a good weekend with the new kart and great that I can mix it with the Super 1 drivers. I’m really looking forward to the last round in November.” Lochlan leads the Championship by 71 points.
