Referendums, North Korean style!

Scottish BorderOn today’s programme we learnt that the Russians suggested that as the turnout in last week’s referendum in Scotland was of similar proportions declared in North Korea, the vote might well have been “rigged”. Well after CNN reported a 110% turnout they might have had a point! It seems that the vote was closely monitored elsewhere in Europe with other separatist movements sending delegates top watch the proceedings, however it is unclear whether the Italian separatist Northern League made it as they couldn’t decide which city was the capital of Scotland. Their first attempt – Hamburg – was a bit off the mark, whilst their second attempt – Strasbourg – was even further adrift! Their third stab finally got it right. Meanwhile, perhaps in anticipation of a “YES” vote a border post appeared on one of the roads leading into Scotland from England which said it would formally open on the 19th of September – the day after the referendum!

Closer to home I was delighted to welcome back our good friend SYLVIA KENT. As you know Sylvia is one of the most prolific writers in Barking-Curfew-Tower-Tuckour area, who not only produces books but also contributes to magazines and newspapers, both national and regional. And now Sylvia has just completed her 10th book, a pictorial history of Barking & Dagenham. The book, titled “BARKING & DAGENHAM FROM OLD PHOTOGRAPHS” should be available from the end of October and is priced at £14.99. Should be a great Christmas present for anyone interested in our heritage and history.
