And The Sky Was A Woman’s Arms – 15/06/14

Bob-Mould-cover

Reliable :
1. consistently good in quality or performance; able to be trusted.

There a select group of artists who fit into the above category. Musicians who, may not always release albums that are mind-blowing, that change your life, but everything they release is always interesting and enjoyable at least. They never let you down.
Bob Mould is one such artist. Whether as part of Husker Du, Sugar or on his own, throughout his career he has managed to achieve a level of quality, never jumping the shark as they say.
This week he released his 11th solo album in the form of Beauty & Ruin, and as per usual, it’s a very moving and excellent record indeed. The album primarily deals with mortality and growing older, summed up by the cover which has a picture of Mould as an angry young man that fades into the Bob Mould of today. Lyrically the theme is of twilight years, regrets but also acceptance, inspired partly by the passing of his father while touring his last album Silver Age. Musically it’s business as usual, tracks such as Kid With Crooked Face whizz past in a blur of guitars and feedback while others have a more steady hazy beauty about them.
While there may not be anything new here, it doesn’t matter, the album is still one that entertains in large doses and has a very fragile heart that draws you in repeatedly.
And that’s why it’s this week’s album of the week.
See you next time!
