I’ll Show You The Sky – 23/03/14

err

There doesn’t seem to be a week that goes by when we have several albums that are celebrating their 5/10/15/20/25/30..etc delete as applicable anniversary. Admittedly I have even become slightly jaded by this, cynically imagining celebrations of an album being out for eight hours, or a six month ultra deluxe edition release. But, aside from that, I did notice that one of my favourite albums was celebrating it’s tenth anniversary. The album being Sufjan Stevens Swans. A majestic record that I must have heard five-hundred and still can’t wait to hear five-hundred more. An album of total beauty, that sweeps you off you feet right from the start before gently laying you down in wonderful haze forty-six minutes later. This was my first album of the week this time round.
For the second, I picked the latest from The War On Drugs. Lost In The Dream is a perfect title for an album that at times borders on 80’s rock ballad territory a la Don Henley but never becomes a parody of itself. The album could also be a lost cousin of one of my other favourite records this year Real Estate’s Atlas. It has the same hazy days of summer feel to it. Gently seducing you while it breaks your heart. Very much an essential release.
PS : A special mention to Southend band Eight Rounds Rapid, who this week released their debut album Lossleader on Cadiz Music. Well worth checking out and you can purchase from the following link https://www.cadizmusic.com/2007/index.php?location=/web/Artists/Eight%20Rounds%20Rapid and you can also check it out on Spotify.
