An Introduction To…Mogwai – 16/03/14

mogwai

I finally got around this week to the second in what you could loosely call a series of features entitled An Introduction To.. This time I chose one of my favourite bands, the almighty Mogwai (well actually it’s just Mogwai but I think Almighty Mogwai has a certain ring to it and there probably already is a tribute band playing a bleak pub in Grimsby with that name as we speak).
Trying to narrow down my favourite tracks into a one hour playlist was a bit of a nightmare, there were shortlists, more shortlists, a slighter longer shortlist that then became two other shortlists, followed by a short..well you get the picture. I imagine the feeling I had trying to pick the playlist was something like what Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt go through when they are trying to decide which orphan to adopt next.
Mogwai are an extremely important band to me, they mean a hell of a lot, have soundtracked some very rough times but have also been responsible for some amazing moments in my life.
As this is an introduction, I have tried to give a good account of what the band are about musically. And if you like this taster, then there is a whole catalogue of mindblowing music that awaits you.  Enjoy! See you next week.

01 – Buzzcocks – Promises (Singles Going Steady – 1981)
02 – Talking Heads – Life During Wartime (Fear Of Music – 1979)
03 – Joan As Police Woman – New Year’s Day (The Classic – 2014)
04 – The Undertones – Teenage Kicks (Single – 1977)
05 – Mogwai – Tuner (Single – 1996)
06 – Mogwai – Like Herod (Young Team – 1997)
07 – Mogwai – Ex – Cowboy (Come On Die Young – 1999)
08 – Mogwai – Hunted By A Freak (Happy Songs For Happy People – 2003)
09 – Mogwai – Burn Girl Prom Queen (EP – 1999)
10 – Mogwai – Glasgow Megasnake (Special Moves – 2010)
11 – Mogwai – Batcat (The Hawk Is Howling – 2008)
12 – Mogwai – New Paths To Helicon Pt I (Government Commissions – 2005)
13 – Mogwai – Terrific Speech (Zidane – A 21st Century Portrait – 2006)
14 – Mogwai – Fridge Magic (Les Revenants – 2013)
15 – Mogwai – Mexican Grand Prix (Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will – 2011)
16 – Mogwai – The Lord Is Out of Control (Rave Tapes – 2014)
17 – Real Estate – April’s Song (Atlas – 2014)
