In Search Of A Story, That’s Never Been Known – 23/02/14

Marissa-Nadler-608x671

It felt great to be back at the Phoenix studios this week after a bit of a lay off due to a partial tear of my achilles’ tendon. What this actually entails is being in plaster in lots of pain unable to do a great deal except for hobble to an armchair for roughly 14 hours, then hobble to bed for as much sleep as a cast allows. Anyhoo, I’m sure you’re thrilled to know I’m on the mend and plaster has been banished, being replaced by a massive boot that kind of makes my left leg look a bit Robocop, well it does if you squint a bit and turn the lights on and off repeatedly.
Enough with the injuries, onto the important business of music. I am just starting to catch-up on some of the releases I’ve missed due to the above nonsense. I’ve still got a lot to get through but a strong contender for album of the year has come early in the form of the new Sun Kil Moon album Benji. An absolutely stunning album of love and loss, told in a way only Mark Kozelek can. Absolutely essential. Another release impressing me is the latest album from Boston singer-songwriter Marissa Nadler. Entitled July it’s a truly gorgeous listen from an artist who has a truly captivating voice, that leaves goosebumps aplenty.
See you next week!

01 – John Carpenter – Escape From New York (Escape From New York – 1981)
02 – Counting Crows – Recovering The Satellites (Recovering The Satellites – 1996)
03 – Sun Kil Moon – Carissa (Benji – 2014)
