On an unusually warm October evening my studio guest was Tony Allen, Press Officer for Chelmsford Cathedral for the past sixteen years and also a Pastoral Assistant. Tony told us about the many events that happen at the Cathedral, including free concerts every Friday at 12.30. He told us that 400 volunteers are involved with the mission of the Cathedral. After National Service he was involved in the first course for journalism, with a fellow student being Michael Parkinson. Tony went on to have a distinguished career in journalism in the north of England. He had always been involved with Scouting. Much to the astonishment of many people, he left his career to work full time in Scouting. Among his many achievements was to help in the training of leaders to establish Muslim groups. He also told us of his work with Save the Children in their youth activities. As an e-mail that came in during the programme noted, “Tony has obviously had a long fulfilling life, and still does”.
