Sub Pop is 25 – 18/08/13

sub-pop_jpg_630x436_q85

The first time I ever saw the words Sub Pop was in 1989. I was 13 years old. I had been allowed to go out with my older brother to his friend’s house that was around the corner from where we lived. I remember him having an amazing collection of records, and as per usual I was sitting on the floor looking through his vinyl. One record caught my eye, the cover being two guys, with guitars and a mass of hair. I read the name of the band, Mudhoney. I asked my brothers friend “what’s this like”. He gave the same response as he usually did “you can borrow it if you like”. I took the record home, put it onto the turntable and as soon as the opening chords of Need struck, my mind was blown. 22 minutes later, as the ending fuzz of In ‘N’ Out Of Grace was ringing round in my head, I was hooked. And I saw those two words on the back cover..Sub Pop.
To say that Sub Pop shaped my listening tastes is probably an understatement, those early years shaped my life, Soundgarden, L7, The Vaselines, Nirvana and countless more bands set me off on a love affair with a label that has rarely ever let me down.
I’m now 37 years young, and Sub Pop are celebrating their 25th anniversary and are as strong and relevant as they ever were. They are still finding ways to make me go “Holy crap!” when I hear a new single or release that they’ve put out.
So, this weeks show is a tribute to a legendary record label, all of tonight’s tracks are from Sub Pop releases. You can check out more about them at https://www.subpop.com.
