My Whole Life Is A Delicate Cycle – 23/06/13

Album Of The WeekThe Uncluded – Hokey Fright : Some things are constant in this universe, such as life / death etc, and also the fact that I will always adore singer / songwriter Kimya Dawson. She has this special ability to move me and make me feel safe, warm and fuzzy. A Kimya Dawson record is like being hugged by those big furry hands from the Cup-a-soup ads of old. This record is slightly different though, being a collaboration with rapper Aesop Rock. Does it work? Oh yes (if it didn’t it would be a pretty bad album of the week!), the two artists gel together perfectly. Kimya’s acoustic guitar and warm lyrics mesh together with Aesop’s abstract rhymes to create something moving, fun and always interesting. And there is not a person alive who can listen to this album and not have the chorus to Delicate Cycle stuck in their head for days and weeks on end!

33RPM At The MoviesVangelis – Blade Runner : After featuring the soundtrack to Pulp Fiction last time out this weeks soundtrack is another recommendation (don’t say I never listen to you lot..), the soundtrack to one of the best sci-fi films ever made, Blade Runner. The score being composed by Greek composer Vangelis. If you’re looking for music that really sets a tone for the film and adds to the atmosphere on screen then this is a perfect example. Although the film was originally released in 1982 the Vangelis soundtrack was not made available until 1994, the first soundtrack in 1982 was a reinterpretation by the New American Orchestra. This album also works on it’s own as an album for the late hours, turn the lights down, put the headphones off, and just drift off into the futuristic world that Vangelis helps create.

Name Remains The SameSea Of Love : The three songs this week that shared the track name were Tom Waits, The National and Cat Power. I did cheat slightly as the first and last tracks are in fact covers. But they are done in such a way as to really make the song their own. And you’d never know..unless I hadn’t of told you..bugger!

This week I have some free music to tell you about which you should definitely get involved and download. First up is a free compilation from the Italians Do It Better label, entitled After Dark 2. Featuring artists as Glass Candy and Chromatics, it’s a rather ace 80 minutes of sultry disco (yes, sultry disco is a thing, I’ve just invented). Anyhoo, you can download this from the following link https://soundcloud.com/johnnyjewel/after-dark-2
Secondly, there’s two new tracks from Brooklyn based band Liars. Which you can download from https://mad.ly/signups/80640/join
Enjoy and I’ll see you next week!
