We Are The Goon Squad And We’re Coming To Town – 26/05/13

After thoroughly missing the presenters chair at Phoenix Towers last week I couldn’t wait to get back into the hot seat for tonight’s show. So let’s take a look at the features first.

Album Of The Week – The Breeders – Last Splash : An absolute classic of a record, celebrating it’s twentieth anniversary this year. A perfect 10/10 listening experience with pretty much all the things I love about music, noisy guitars, sublime harmonies, if you are looking for a summer album and you’ve never heard this, then you’ve found your answer!

33RPM At The Movies – Ennio Morricone – The Thing : The greatest sci-fi horror flick of all time (in my humble opinion) needed a great score to go with it. Who better to turn to than a master such as Morricone, who delivers a soundtrack every bit as tense and unsettling as the film itself.

Name Remains The Same – I Believe – The three artists that were played who shared that song title were My Bloody Valentine, EMF and Tears For Fears. There wasn’t time to play the R.E.M. track with the same name. Although all four are rather good for me it’s the Tears For Fears track which comes out on top. Just about though!

Unless you live in a cave / underwater / the moon (although this has probably hyped its way to the moon), you would’ve been aware that the new Daft Punk album is finally with us. Although not living up to the hype (which it was never going too, even if it had been perfect), the album does have one of the tracks of the year in Giorgio By Moroder. Which was a must for this weeks playlist. Sticking with the electronic side of things, a single has finally been released from the forthcoming Boards Of Canada album Tomorrow’s Harvest. If this is anything to go by the album is going to be superb. A final special mention goes to The Fall, who have released their 5,785th album this week entitled Re-mit. And as you’d expect, it’s The Fall doing what The Fall does, and doing it very well!
See you next week!

01 – David Bowie – Fashion (Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps) – 1980)
02 – Joe Jackson – Throw It Away (Look Sharp – 1979)
03 – Daft Punk – Giorgio By Moroder (Random Access Memories – 2013)
04 – My Bloody Valentine – I Believe (Feed Me With Your Kiss – 1988)
05 – The Breeders – Cannonball (Last Splash – 1993)
06 – The Fall – No Respects rev. (Re-Mit – 2013)
07 – Palace Brothers – You Will Miss Me When I Burn (Days In The Wake – 1994)
08 – Boards Of Canada – Reach For The Dead (Tomorrow’s Harvest – 2013)
09 – Thelonious Monk – Humph (Genius Of Modern Music Vol 1 – 1947)
10 – The Burning Hell – Amateur Rappers (People – 2013)
11 – EMF – I Believe (Schubert Dip – 1991)
12 – The Breeders – No Aloha (Last Splash – 1993)
13 – The Breeders – Flipside (Last Splash – 1993)
14 – Four Tet – Unspoken (promo version) (Unreleased – 2003)
15 – Soundgarden – The Day I Tried To Live (Superunknown – 1995)
16 – The Big Eyes Family Players – Otto (Family Favourites – 2011)
17 – Ennio Morricone – Humanity (Part II) (The Thing – 1982)
18 – Tears For Fears – I Believe (Songs From The Big Chair – 1985)
19 – The Breeders – Do You Love Me Now? (Last Splash – 1993)
