Midweek Football LIVE ( ish… )

Southend United 2-0 Dagenham & Redbridge

Billericay Town 2-4 Cambridge City

Enfield Town  2-3 East Thurrock United

Potters Bar Town  3-0  Brentwood Town

—————

10pm – So to sum up, disaster for ‘Ricay and Brentwood. Triumph for Southend and East Thurrock. Pah. Twin imposters, they are.

Next up will be the Rocks trip to the Met Police on Saturday. Until then, enjoy your football. And keep ’em peeled.

—————

9.35pm – Full time and East Thurrock grab a sensational winner!  Get in there!

9.30pm – Joy at last! A dramatic Rocks equaliser and Billericay pull one back. Hang on a sec …

9.25pm – Almost a flat battery but Sam Higgins reduces the arrears by half at Enfield Town to give East Thurrock United some hope. All very comfortable for Sarfend here now.

9.12pm – Game over at New Lodge. Embarrassment looms for `Ricay.

9.10pm – It’s all gone Freddie Starr. All of our sides bar Southend (who are against another of ours anyway) are now two goals down. A moment of real comedy at Roots Hall as a terrible mix up between the Daggers defender and keeper results is Assombachumbawumba doubling the lead.

9.00pm – Not going well at all. Billericay are staring humiliation in the face and the Rocks fall two behind. Someone pull the floodlights please.

8.50pm – Back underway. But Brentwood Town have to do it all with just 9 players. Another red card before the break. At this rate they’ll have less players than Kettering.

—————

8.35pm – Half time everywhere and work to do for all of our sides. I’m off for a Bovril and some gloves.

8.25pm – A flurry of action at New Lodge.  Billericay Town take the lead against their Southern League opponents but are pegged back within seconds.  Brentwood Town, meanwhile, go two behind and have a player sent off.  Blimey.

8.10pm – Not a good night for our sides so far. Doubly difficult to update with frozen pinkies too. But Ryan Creswell has given Southend a 17th minute lead. Did I see it? Pah. Trying to update this. Ah well.

7.55pm – Well, that’s not so good, is it.  Early goals conceded by both Brentwood Town and East Thurrock United.  Very lively here, though, with both the Shrimpers and Daggers having shots cleared off the line.

7.42pm – The teams come out at Roots Hall to a small but enthusiastic crowd.

7.30pm – A very good evening from Roots Hall.  Once again, something different.  Rather than at one of our local 5non-league teams, I’m at the Johnstones Paint Trophy clash between our two Football League sides.

As ever, Southend United are in turmoil off the pitch, but are holding it together on it, just three points from a play-off spot, and have perhaps the best manager outside the top two divisions in Paul Sturrock.

The Daggers are pretty much settled, on and off the pitch, and again they have a fine manager in John Still.  Resources are scarce and they have certainly over-achieved the past few years, as their Wembley victory a couple of years ago testifies.

It’s a cup night, too, so there’s every chance of a bit of drama, and maybe even penalties, which the visitors won last time that happened between them.  This could be fun.

Elsewhere, Billericay Town have a crucial FA Cup replay at New Lodge.  Defeat Cambridge City, and the New Forest awaits, in the form of AFC Totton, just one match from the Football League big boys.  Ooh, Billericay v Southend or Dagenham, how good would that be?  First of all, though, they have to win tonight.

There’s also a full Ryman League programme, with East Thurrock United and Brentwood Town both in action, having had okay-ish starts to their league campaign, which has been interrupted greatly by their cup runs.  They have games in hand but a few more points now will come in nicely.

I can’t promise I’ll be able to update every few minutes, but I will at least let you know how the teams are getting on.  The station’s sports twitter feed, @PhoenixFMSport , will also keep you informed.

GAME ON!
