A GUEST WITH A LUST FOR LIVING

With the arrival of Elliott James into the Powis household at 10:15 yesterday morning, I was privileged to be entrusted to keep the music flowing on today’s DRIVE show.

As usual when deputising for Bryan I include the THREE O’CLOCK THRILL incorporating three absolute belters back-to-back and today was no exception. Today’s choice was made up of The Doobey Bros with CHINA GROVE, followed by HOW WILL I KNOW by Whitney Houston and finally we had Steve Winwood inviting you to ROLL WITH IT. Great music for a lovely sunny day on the best day of the working week, all the better with the weather set fair for the weekend.

In the third hour of the show I was very pleased to have the company of MIKE CONYERS from Crushes Manor Clinic. Now Mike is an amazing character; he was blinded by a cricket ball at the age of 12, but still loves the game. Unwilling to let adversity stand in his way he trained as a physiotherapist and having worked in a series of NHS hospitals all of which were subsequently demolished, he eventually set up on his own and Crushes Manor Clinic was born. Over the past 25 years that the business has been operating, Mike has treated several  sporting celebrities and many patients are convinced that Mike sees better with his fingers than a good many sighted physiotherapists!

But Mike’s story doesn’t stop there. Never one to shy away from challenges, Mike goes rambling and hill walking tackling large stretches of the most gruelling walks in the country including the Essex Way. Downhill skiing and running for charity are just some of the things undertaken by Mike. Indeed he has run several half marathons, including Brentwood’s own half marathon as well as The Great North Run. Just this year he raised £7600 for the Brentwood based SNAP (Special Needs and Parents)  charity by completing the London Marathon. In recognition of this the Brentwood Brewing Company brewed a special beer called “MIKE’S MARATHON”.

But already Mike is planning new ventures including climbing the 19000 foot, Mount Kilimanjaro.

On top of all this Mike, a Rotarian, is heavily involved in speaking at all manner of clubs and societies.

A truly remarkable man, you can listen again to my conversation with Mike right here: – [audio:https://www.phoenixfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Mike-Conyers.mp3|titles=Mike Conyers]

Well that’s about it for your DRIVE home on this lovely Friday afternoon. I hope to be with you again on Monday to see you safely home after that first pesky day back at work after the weekend. In the meantime make the most of your weekend by getting out there in the sunshine to enjoy all the great events happening in our area this weekend.

All the best,

Scott
