ANOTHER SOGGY BANK HOLIDAY PACKED LUNCH

You just have to admit we really have suffered this year with the Bank Holiday weather. We may have enjoyed extra bank holidays but every one without exception has been a huge disappointment weatherwise. Well if the weather hasn’t tempted you to sample the delights of the “great outdoors” hopefully you will have been encouraged to cosy up to the radio. And today we added an extra temptation in the shape of local author, BRIAN EVANS, who since 1988,  has penned no less than 33 books with pictorial histories of many towns, notably in Metropolitan Essex and East London. On top of this Brian is also a director of, and volunteer with the Museum at Havering Atte Bower.

In addition to his work at the museum, Brian is also running a series of “WALK ‘N TALK” events, so if you want to take a step back in time with a true enthusiast who really knows his stuff why not join Brian on one of these events? The first of these will be on 4th September in Havering Village. The group will be meeting in Havering Village at 10:15 on The Green by the Church. The second event will be meeting in Balgores Square, just north of Gidea Park Station again at 10:15 in the morning on 22nd September. Afterwards the group will take stock of what they’ve learnt by unwinding at the local Ship Inn.

Brian’s latest book is “ROMFORD THROUGH TIME” but as it very much a pictorial, should probably be read in conjunction with his earlier book, “ROMFORD A HISTORY”. Both books and indeed many of his other books should be available at any large book shop such as Waterstones and Smiths. The shop at Havering Museum, which is on the site of the old Romford Brewery has probably the largest selection of books on historical topics anywhere in the area. Another good source is, of course your local library.

You can hear my conversation with Brian again here: – [audio:https://www.phoenixfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Brian-Evans.mp3|titles=Brian Evans]

In the second hour of the show Frances Clamp popped in to give a view of Billericay in both world wars. Listen again to what Frances had to say here: – [audio:https://www.phoenixfm.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Bygones-21st-August.mp3|titles=Bygones 21st August]

Well that’s me done for another week. Whatever the weather does try to enjoy your extra day off work and keep it Phoenix.

See you next week,

Scott
