Underneath the river bed, we burned the river down – 02/08/11

Another packed show this week, including a track from the new Laura Marling album which is due out on September 12th called A Creature I Don’t Know. From the sound of the first song Sophia it’s going to be another great album from the singer/songwriter.

Also worth a mention is the reissue of R.E.M’s Lifes Rich Pageant, which is the latest of their IRS albums to be remastered and re-released. As with the other reissues the sound quality is superb and (in my humble opinion), an improvement over the original, so to mark this release the excellent track Cuyahoga was played.

For covers corner I picked 2 songs from the Nirvana tribute album Newermind, which celebrates the 20th anniversary of the landmark album and features artists such as The Meat Puppets and the two artists which were played on the show The Vaselines and Amanda Palmer (whose version of Polly is probably the highlight of the album). This album is free to download from www.spin.com and I highly advise you do so!

This weeks lyrics of the week came courtesy of Eels (a favourite of 33RPM) and the poignant song A Line In The Dirt, taken from the album End Times, which deals with the theme of broken relationships and seperation. Lyrics are below :

she locked herself in the bathroom again
so i am p****** in the yard
i have to laugh when i think how far it’s gone
but things aren’t funny any more

i drew a line into the dirt
and dared her to step right across it
and she did

so i am knocking on the door again
i say “do you want to be alone?”
she says “no, i don’t wanna be alone,
but i think that you do”

i drew a line into the dirt
and dared her to step right across it
and she did

and i know she’s right
i know how it would be
if i had my own way
with the world as i know it should be

she locked herself in the bathroom again
so i’ve been shutting down the lights
and i don’t know if i’ll ever go back again
i’m driving straight into the night

i drew a line into the dirt
and dared her to step right across it
and she did

To round things off rather nicely the show also included tracks from Men Without Hats (whose album I managed to pick up on vinyl at the weekend for only £3!), The Horrors, Warpaint and loads more. Full playlist is below. See you next week!
