The International Language Of Music..17/05/11

A veritable banquet of great music to feast upon on this weeks show. Our featured artist on An Introduction To.. were Super Furry Animals who have over the course of 9 studio albums crafted consistantly brilliant and always interesting music. We played a track from their first two albums (Fuzzy Logic, Radiator) and also a track from their last Dark Days / Light Years. For anyone interested in further listening I would say just start at the beginning and work your way through or the singles compilation Songbook.

For Covers Corner we had a Rod Stewart cover, a TV theme and a cover of Bjork’s Hyperballad which is from an album of artists reimagining the Bjork album Post which you can download for free from https://stereogum.com/enjoyed/ , I would heartily recommend this as there are some superb artists featured and the album is well worth an hour of your time.

Quite a few new tracks this week including one from the new Bon Iver LP (which personally I can’t wait for), Boris, Thurston Moore, My Morning Jacket plus a track from the sort of new Kate Bush – Director’s Cut.

And finally, I spent 3 nights in the past week in the company of Sufjan Stevens at his two Royal Festival Hall shows and a trip down to Brighton to catch him at the Brighton Dome. It proved to reaffirm why (in my humble opinion) Sufjan is the best singer-songwriter making music today. All 3 shows were immense, stunning, spell-binding, visually amazing and sometimes bordering on the insane. Support on all 3 dates came from label-mate and part of Sufjan’s band DM Stith who was also superb. And I think I left a little part of me among the glitter, balloons and the whole experience which I am still buzzing over.

Next weeks show will be at a slightly later time of 10pm – midnight for one week only. Tracklisting below, album titles in brackets.

01. New Order – True Faith (Substance)
02. Neutral Milk Hotel – Ghost (In An Aeroplane Over The Sea)
03. Super Furry Animals – The International Language Of Screaming (Radiator)
04. DM Stith – Fire Of Birds (Heavy Ghost)
