ATHLETES made their first competitive return to the track in the Havering Mayesbrook Open.  A host of south Essex athletes made the short trip to Hornchurch and plenty returned with personal bests (PB) in the bag.  Basildon AC’s field event squad was particularly impressive with four of the club’s young athletes setting new bests.  Under-17 thrower Aaron York collected two PBs in the shot-putt and discuss, throwing 8.54m in the shot and 20.51m in the discuss.  While in the javelin discipline, under-17 team-mate Jemma Pemberton threw 25.70m.  And this was enough for the talented thrower to scoop the women’s event overall.  Fellow Basildon javelin specialist Alex Wright, 17, threw 47.31m in the men’s event, with team-mate Luke Beard reaching 39.48m.  Youngsters Harry Abbott, 16, and Adam Brown, 15, threw 33.34m and 32.18m respectively to claim PBs.

 

CRICKET

Essex have completed the signing of a new overseas player.  South African Lonwabo Tsotsobe, 27, expects to join up with the squad for next week’s trip to Middlesex.  Tsotsobe will add extra fire power to the attack as a left arm fast-medium bowler. Following the ICC World Cup, he jumped up to a career-best sixth position in the latest ICC Reliance Mobile ODI rankings.
